From Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis to the Royal Academy of Sciences in France: “I have now arrived at a place where life is such that you, distinguished sirs, could not even imagine in your dreams. Suffice it to say here: at the Poles, the earth’s surface undeniably takes on the shape that Newton had previously calculated. I am no humorist, neither am I over-enlightened with the wisdom of the Lord, merely a scientist who relies on scientific facts, but I now tread in a place where the heavens are wider than where you are.”
In 1687, based on theoretical research, Isaac Newton, determined that the earth was flattened at the Poles. Observations and research during the scientific expedition to Lapland in 1736-37, led by the French mathematician Pierre-Louis Moreau de Maupertuis, proved the theory to be correct.
